My favorite things that we got to see in D.C. were by far the Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the World War II Memorial. This is a period of history that I am obsessed with anyway, so to see these two things was amazing.
My great-granddad fought under Patton in the war, and returned home with an injured leg and stories of being hidden in the potato cellars of small villages to avoid capture by the Nazis. I wish I had been older while he was alive so that I would have realized the piece of history that I had in him... so that I could have known to ask questions, get stories...
Both of them - the WWII memorial and Holocaust Museum - are a hard to talk about. Hard to talk about in the way that there really are not words to adequately describe, or give justice to the feelings evoked...
We didn't get near enough time in D.C., so I hope to go back very soon!

Amazing!
