NOT a Sweet Pea

Yes. That is my tummy.

Yes. We are expecting.

No. I am not kidding.

Yes. It was a completely unplanned, total surprise.

While in Ukraine—and even before—I was sick and/or exhausted most of the time I was there. I blamed it on stress, travel, the adoption, new food, etc. When I got home, I continued to feel this way... plus just felt plain weird. Finally, last Thursday I decided that "Even though there was no way" I would take a home pregnancy test so that "I could have one less thing to worry about."

Lo, and behold. It was positive.

Then I took 3 more tests. Then I called the doctor, who told me I could come in on Monday.

We were completely freaked out. I cried in the bathroom a lot – because we also didn't want to say anything to the girls until we knew something "For sure." We were just so overwhelmed at first: 1) We JUST got back with the girls, and have so much going on with that, and also had no idea how they would react to this kind of news 2) Have made a huge cut in salary with my not working full time 3) We were NOT "trying" 4) I ate lots of unpasteurized cheese, took aspirin, used out-houses, ate meat that had been transported in a car trunk, etc., in Ukraine - NOT the greatest prenatal care....

By Monday morning I had accepted that this was happening, and had - in my head - decided that the most I could be was 6 weeks. According to the handy-dandy What to Expect book, the little guy was about the size of a sweet pea.

As the picture flashed up on the ultrasound machine, my mouth just dropped... and Shane exclaimed "BRANDI. That is NOT a sweet pea!"

Turns out I am 12 weeks. Already almost out of my first trimester. I was pregnant for weeks before we even left for Ukraine. And we had no clue.

We are still trying to wrap our heads around it, but are excited! It has made the couple of weeks of being home even more crazy than they would have been. However, we know that the Lord has a plan for this, the He has planned it this way, and His hand is over it.

Will keep everyone updated!
