One Month

As of this past weekend we have been home for four weeks. Kind of weird to think about. One one hand, it feels like it went by quickly - but on the other, not so much.

The girls are doing well. We discovered that they love Ken's Creamy Balsamic dressing, so that is pretty great - especially if it means they will continue downing green salad like they have been the past week. We are still in the process of getting Sasha's teeth to a better place. She has had both root canals, and we go to get the first permanent crown put on next week... then the other the following week. After that she will have to have three baby teeth extracted. I am sure we will need braces at some point, but hopefully that will be down the road a bit. Marina has her first dentist appointment next week as well, and we are hoping she doesn't have anything drastic that needs to be done.

Next issue: eyes. I think that both of them need glasses, and both of them are already saying they will not wear them - so we are going to have a battle on our hands.

I go to the doctor for my 16 week appointment next Monday. Monday is also the day that we start homeschooling - which I am SUPER nervous about. I am sure it will be trial and error for a few weeks, especially with the schedule - but hopefully it will go well. I think this may be mostly a cultural thing - combined with a little of just being kids... but they do not like to attempt things that they "don't know", because they are so worried about getting something wrong. They would rather not do it, or try to learn something, if it means they might get something wrong - or not get it right off the bat. We have already had tears with learning English on Rosetta Stone, especially with Marina, when we get answers wrong... so I am a little worried about that part of school. I explained to them that no one is born knowing everything, that it is a continual process, everyone is always learning (and messing up until they do), that it isn't bad that you don't know something, things take practice, etc., etc.

Marina still "doesn't want to learn English" - so that is a daily struggle. We are working on it. I think she is starting to pick up more. We recently instituted English only at meal times, and it is going well.. it is especially good for Marina who has such a crutch in Sasha - and can get her to basically translate between us and her.

Also, we got the girls certificates of citizenship in - so they are officially American Citizens now! As soon as we get their passports back from the Ukrainian consulate we can apply for social security numbers. Those will be super nice to have, so that every time I fill out something official, a form at a doctor's office, etc., I don't have to explain why they don't have a SSN.

Shane planned a surprise weekend trip — for just the two of us — a while back, that we will be taking in October... I am SO very excited about that (especially since it will be our only vacation for a long while).

Shane is also bringing home Chinese food tonight. YUM. I literally am having a hard time thinking about anything else, and can't wait for 6:15.

  1. Tell the girls their grandpa read a quote one time from their mother in an application for admittance into college which roughly said and I paraphrase, "look them in the eye", "its you against them', "it is better to have tried and failed than to never have tried". I still have that application if you want to show it to them.

Good eating! You are eating for two and I am sure my grandson's/granddaughter's first exposure to Chinese will lead to Chop Suey Inn again!
