By the Seashore

This past weekend we headed down to Seagrove (next to Seaside) for a couple of days of beach time. Shane's grandmother owns a condo down there, so we have a great place to stay - just a block off the beach.

This was the girl's first time to the beach... at least our beaches. They have both been to the Mediterranean while on a hosting program to Spain (not too shabby, though I am not sure what part of the coast). They were pretty excited when we first went out on the beach and talked about the white sand looking like snow. Unfortunately the water this weekend left a lot to be desired - it was brown and murky in huge patches due to seaweed. The girls had bits of the seaweed just covering them every time they came out of the water. After about a half a day at the beach, they were ready for the pool. Hopefully the next time were are able to get down there, the water will be as I originally promised them. Blue. Maybe they, and Shane, will want to spend more time there then. I, on the other hand, want nothing more than to be out at 7 am walking... spending a chunk of the day reading under an umbrella... and then having another good long walk at dusk. Too bad the rest of my family doesn't share my feelings.

Other than the beach and pool, we spent some time walking around Seaside. There is a great little bookstore/record store that we love to peruse. I always leave with bits of paper stuffed in my purse bearing the names of random books I might not have run across elsewhere. We spent over an hour in there this time. They have tons of books, especially kids books, that you might not see in a normal bookstore... so the girls had their minds blown by the seemingly endless array of pop-up fairy and princess books. I really tried to push things like Paddington Bear, numerous Newberry and Caldecott Award winners - but to no avail. As much as it pained me, we decided that since this was pretty much their first interest shown in books at all... a pop-up/interactive book with the story of The Little Mermaid (real, not Disney... Sasha's pick) and a book about the Fairies of Pixie Hollow (Marina's pick) were better than the alternative first choices of glorified princess coloring books with stickers.

The first Auburn game was Saturday night, so Shane and I cooked dinner for everyone so that we could all stay in and watch the game. The girls were very unimpressed with their crab cakes, sauteed shrimp, asparagus, and garlic cheese biscuits.... although they did enjoy the roasted potatoes. They also refused to wear their Auburn shirts, and watched Little Mermaid (Disney, not real) and Camp Rock in another room during the game.

Shane and I did manage to have a little dinner date. Nan Nan and George watched the girls and ordered pizza, and Shane and I went to a restaurant we really like down there. SO good. We also went before 6:00, and got half price entrees - the key to eating on a budget at the beach.

Beach. I miss you.

Vacation. Why can't you stay longer?

Now... for what I know you all really came here for. Pictures.
